Eight to ten hours a day, five days a week, your dog waits. No movement. No mental engagement. Just the couch and the quiet.
By Friday, they are restless, sometimes destructive, and carrying a little more weight than they should be. Then the weekend comes and you take them to Chautauqua Park or up the Mount Sanitas trail. Four miles, elevation gain, serious exertion. Monday they are back on the couch.
This is what veterinarians call the weekend warrior pattern. The cycle of sedentary weeks and hard weekend efforts puts real stress on a dog's musculoskeletal system and joint health. CCL (cranial cruciate ligament) injuries are one of the most common and expensive orthopedic surgeries in dogs, running $3,000 to $6,000, and inconsistent conditioning is a documented risk factor.
The problem is not that you love your dog. It is that your schedule does not match their body's needs. That is fixable.
